Estrela de Fura, the 55.22 carat, cushion-shaped ruby, sold at auction yesterday in New York for $34,804,500 establishing a new world record not only for a ruby, but also for any coloured gemstone at auction.
At 101 carats Estrela de Fura was the largest gem quality ruby ever discovered when the rough stone was found at Fura Gems’ Montepuez mine, Mozambique, in July last year.
The previous world record had been held since May 2015 by the Sunrise Ruby, a cushion-shaped, 25.59 carat Burmese ruby which sold for $30.42m in Geneva.
We find it very exciting that top-quality rubies, the King of gemstones, are now achieving price levels that were, until recently, reserved only for diamonds – price levels which reflect the ruby’s rarity, beauty and importance.
